Practical Peace Philosophy

The Live and Let Live Practicial Peace Philosophy involves two separate principles.

The Moral Principle

The Live and Let Live Moral Principle seeks to inspire all people to be excellent humans. The Movement embraces and promotes the Moral Principle to achieve the goals of optimizing human happiness and well-being while minimizing suffering. Such a goal is necessary if we are ever to achieve a lasting peace.

The following seven aspirational values are suggested for those aspiring to be excellent humans. This is a non-exhaustive list. Individuals may want to add other aspirational values that suit their personal preferences. While members of the Movement may offer advice about how others should live their lives, as the Moral Principle is voluntary, all members of the Movement oppose importing any of these aspirational values into the law, thereby mandating others to adopt them.

All competent adults should decide for themselves how best to live their lives so long as they do not aggress against others or their property.

The Legal Principle

In addition to encouraging people to be excellent humans, the Movement promotes calibrating (assess and adjust) the law to remove aggression in the spirit of freedom. The Movement seeks to prohibit all aggression. The Live and Let Live Legal Principle – Donโ€™t Aggress – requires all acts of aggression should always be illegal. This is not a suggestion and there are no exceptions.

The Legal Principle applies to all people equally, even if they form groups, organizations, corporations, or governments. It is the most fundamental legal principle upon which all other laws ought to be based. Therefore, all laws ought to be in harmony with the Legal Principle such that all aggression be outlawed.

โ€œAggressionโ€ Defined:

  1. Initiatingย nonconsensualย forceย againstย anotherย personย orย theirย property;
  2. Engaging in fraud;
  3. Engaging in coercion;ย
  4. Creating a substantial risk or threat of initiating nonconsensual physical force against another person or their property;
  5. Breaching a valid contract;ย
  6. Engaging in unreasonable conduct causing harm to another person or their property; or
  7. Breaching a fiduciary duty.

To properly observe the Live and Let Live Philosophy, and to promote freedom and peace, we must allow others the exact same right to also peacefully live their lives on their own terms. We must let others live even if we disagree with the peaceful choices they make.

The cost of achieving peace is letting others do what you also have the right to do; to own and control their own lives. This is especially important when we find their choices to be immoral, unhealthy, unwise, or against their self-interest. We must legally respect the rights of others to peacefully do things with which we disagree.ย

As a moral matter, and despite this, we can and should do our best to encourage people to be excellent humans. And they have the right to reject our suggestions.
